Batterer's Treatment Program
The Batterer’s Treatment program is a 6-15 month program, which provides a psycho-educational and psychotherapy component to male perpetrators of domestic violence. There are groups available for both court mandated and non-mandated clients. Jim Freeman Group Psychotherapist Ltd. provides the treatment services with administration provided by CAWES.
| Operating Principles: |
- Zero tolerance for violence.
- To do nothing that will further increase the risk of violence to women and/or children.
- To provide a treatment process that will focus on the causative process of male violence (ie. Power and control issues and sexism).
The overall focus of the treatment program is violence. The short-range goal is to bring an end to the violent behavior, while the long-range goal is to change the beliefs and attitudes in the offenders, so that they no longer see their spouses as an acceptable target for violence. The Treatment Group for Men Who Batter Their Partners is a psychotherapy group, not a support group and from a treatment perspective the only innovation is the focus on violence. Group members may be required to seek out and attend counseling/therapy for other mental health problems. The therapy group will be closed and run according to the following schedule:
| Psycho-Educational Phase: |
For 2 hours one night/week for 12 weeks the group will meet and focus on its 1st goal - to bring an end to violent behavior. Movement will also begin toward the longer-range goal of sowing the seed for changing attitudes.
| Intensive Phase: |
For 2 hours every other week for 12 months the program will promote further cognitive restructuring in beliefs, constructs and attitudes, with some discussion centering around problem solving and breaking of dependence on the treatment group. This phase is conducive to moving the client from an intellectual understanding of the material presented to integrating the material and beginning to apply it in their own relationships.
| Follow-Up Phase: |
After completion of the 15-month program, contact is maintained with client and partner for a period of 6 months.
